Announcements

--Updated Jan 6.--

With the odd start date in the middle of week 1, many instructors and students have had troubles with due dates. We encourage all instructors to exercise leniency with the lesson 1 due dates. Instructors may issue Special Access to students for many of the lesson 1 assignments, or edit the due or end date for the entire class (exercise caution with this second option). Please do not submit a ticket to have the course due dates "Fixed."

Students can begin accessing their Winter 2017 online courses on December 31. We encourage you to reach out to students as soon as possible and encourage them to begin working on their course. Winter semester will be unusual in that the official semester start date will not be until Thursday, January 5. Since Lesson 1 concludes on January 7, students are encouraged to start in advance of the official start date. They cannot be required to submit assignments before January 5.Most course designs are intentionally flexible in Lesson 1 to accommodate this type of variation. However, a few courses may have due dates listed prior to January 5. Online instructors should exercise leniency in due dates the first week of the semester. Instructors may issue Special Access to students who begin lesson 1 assignments later in the week. Some students may start the class later in the week, and others may be adding the class until the add/drop deadline.

Winter 2017 is even more unique because Monday January 2nd is also a University holiday. We expect some students may reach out to you on Monday, so also communicate your Monday availability in your pre-semester welcome e-mail.

To assist students at the start of the semester, the Online Support Center (OSC) and other key services will be available, including January 2nd.

  • Are we as teachers still eligible to buy the microsoft office suite for a discounted price? If so how?

  • I sent out my welcome letter to my pathway students saying that the semester would be starting January 5th, but that I really recommended they start as soon as possible after December 31 when it becomes available. One of my students just wrote back to me saying that Pathway has been sending them emails saying it starts on the 2nd. Is that correct? I will send a different email correcting that if so.

    • Hi Kim,  I heard from my AIM today that Pathways is on a different calendar than the rest of BYU-I.  The official Pathways start day is January 2nd (someone please correct me if I'm wrong).

As a side note for the administration: it'd be great if all emails/announcements could specify whether or not it applies to BYU-I online, Pathways, or all online. It can be a little tough at times to figure out which announcements apply to Pathways and which ones don't.

      • Yep, Pathway start date is Jan. 2nd! This date is the one listed on the pathway.lds.org website.

  • Thanks for the great information and support!

  • I received a notice with previewing the Pathway Winter semester courses. Now, I am unable to locate it. Do you know or have it? I would like to take a second look at it.

  • How/when will we know what course(s) we are scheduled to teach? Is there somewhere that we can view this?

    • I think if you go to onlineadmin.byui.edu and login with your BYU-I login information, you should be able to see any contracts you are scheduled for, as well as what level of contract they are (mine is currently a Level Two, until more students register for the class). Hope this helps!

      • Great! Thanks, DaNae! I guess for those of us on a Level Two contract, we won't know anything for certain until it gets closer to the semester beginning.

        Thank you!
